What Is Disruptitude?
It is not what you think.
Disruption has become one of the most overused words in modern medicine. Every conference has a panel about it. Every health system has a task force dedicated to it. Every technology company selling software to your hospital has it in their pitch deck.
That is not Disruptitude.
Equity is the foundation of real disruption. Community is not optional. And leadership that ignores who the system was built for is not real leadership. Treats the wrong conditions faster. And leadership without a reckoning with who the system was built for and who it has been failing is just profit management with better branding.
The Definition
Disruptitude (n.): A disciplined, equity-grounded leadership mindset and aptitude that refuses to accept the gap between what health systems promise and what they actually deliver. The practiced ability to see what systems have made invisible, lead from that vision, and build what has never been built before. From whatever seat you occupy, with whatever resources you have, for the people who need it most.
Disruptitude is a way of being before it is a strategy. It is a way of remaining present and perceptive before it is a way of doing. And it is available to every person in this room regardless of specialty, title, or how many years you have left in your residency.
What Disruptitude Is Not
• Not disruption for its own sake.
• Not anti-institution.
• Not reserved for executives.
• Not comfortable.
• Not a moment.
Disruptitude is a daily practice and a sustained commitment. It will cost you something. The disruptive leader accepts this because the cost of not questioning and improving is always higher.
Disruptitude centers creativity and inquiry, always asking:
What are we building? Who will be better off?
